Bait Al-Suhaimi

The square along Al Muizz Street has been a valuable asset as it has been the city’s main street and the site of the city’s most important buildings since the establishment of Islamic Cairo in the 10th century. The palaces, mosques and mausoleums of Cairo’s wealthiest rulers all occupy precious spaces along this central street. Darb Al-Asfara (Yellow Road), where Bait Al-Suhaimi is just a few meters from Al Muizz Street, is popular in Cairo as wealthy citizens compete for land near the promenade known as ‘Palastes’. It has become one of the richest streets.

The title given to Al Muizz his street in the Naguib Mahfouz novel of the same name. Built in the 17th century, Bait Al-Suhaimi is one of Cairo’s most magnificent houses. After falling into disrepair in the 20th century, the house has been restored in the last decade and is now a fine example of medieval Cairo’s finest non-monumental architecture.
